Tuesday and for Thursday

Hope you've had a good day today. . . let me run a couple of things past you for the next two days.

IN CLASS ON TUESDAY
As usual, different progress for different reasons.  In all classes, we set up some basic similarity between Conrad's style and the quality of impressionistic painting that makes the works much more clear from farther away.  Up close, they tend to look blurry.  So we looked at the "clarity" of the narrator's early opinion and closing commentary about the nature of the waterway he sees out ahead of him, and related the concept to aspects of the frame story structure.questions involving the frame story, and the expectations for the narrator.   In second and thirrd period, we looked at the concept of "time" and Marlow's reason for bringing up the Romans in Britain--so we talked more about that. In 3rd period, actually Benjamin talkied about that; well done!   We discussed Marlow's early interest in the "empty place" on the map.  Here's where it gets tricky; I know we discussed the "whited sepulchre" well in 1st period, and some early impressions of the Company office.  In 2nd and 3rd, we barely worked with the whited sepulchre, and didn't even make it to the offices. Re: Fresleven--make sure you note the similarity of the grass growing through the skeletal bones to the grass growing between the cobblestones:  so what?

FOR THURSDAY
  • By class time, you should be done for sure with Part I, 1-18.  If you've been absent (sick or otherwise out), do your best, but the next item takes priority.
  • Short story comparative/contrast essay:  Typed draft due on Friday.  So everyone needs to be working on this. Don't just throw something together late Thursday night.
  • But for class on Thursday, be sure to have your HoD materials with you.

FOR TOMORROW
  • You should have the questions on Part I finished for tomorrow.  If you've been out sick (or otherwise gone), do the best you can.
  • But don't worry about starting the rereading of Part II as homework,.
  • Instead, focus on the short story comparison/contrast essay: DRAFT DUE FRIDAY
During class time tomorrow, you will have about 30 minutes to work--have short story materials IF you're behind, and the HoD materials with you regardless of your current progress.
