Random Thoughts for the Day

1) What I did NOT do is pick up with the Romans and another idea or two in 2nd and 3rd period. We hadn't finished the last couple of paragraphs of the part I intended to read and discuss together in class before turning you loose on the HofD. But you don't really need that part to keep reading, and I'll simply wait to fill in that part until we cycle back.  I knew there would not be time today.

2) the Grammar/Mechanics Assessment
Don't panic.  I'm not really surprised at the results, and I'm not unhappy with you as individuals, despite whatever theatrics I might have exhibited in your particular section.  As a group, you can expect some further instruction (which will always include some very public cross-examination. . . you need to be able to answer what you're asked about a sentence in order to work towards figuring out the right answer).  I have to adjust one more error on first-period papers, and at some point soon, we will finish up the Bremner quiz.  But mostly I have to decide where to address our efforts given the limited time in AP senior English to do what I sincerely believe should be mostly accomplished before the 10th grade.

3) I forgot to ask who had been absent yesterday, but I DID put on yesterday's blog that the new essay assignment was in the folder.  It was, and some of you may have picked it up without my even being aware of it.  (Why is my the correct pronoun in the previous sentence?)  But if you didn't, I've linked it here:

4) So focus on the straight-though reading of Heart of Darkness.   Do NOT read Sparks Notes, etc.  Read the text.  Every word.  But don't sweat the small stuff (or even some of the big stuff--with H of D it's sometimes hard to tell.)You should be finish with the first reading by Monday.

Have your book with you in class on Monday.  No excuses.
