Personal essays returned/discussed a bit. Some discussion of participation--note that the second participation "grade" for the first quarter covers only 10/7-1/27, and is still under the "grace period" of "show up and don't cause trouble" (which none of you do), and you get a mid-B. To be more accurate, even the 17's have spoken up once in awhile, but it takes more frequency to get an 18/19. 20's are rare, and involve more significant contribution. But the end of the grace period means the stakes are being raised. Barely talking won't earn a 17, and even 18/19's will requre at least some higher-order thinking, connection, reflecting, etc., beyond simply "answering a question," or even lots of questions.
Heart of Darkness
- It's a frame story: we established that briefly, and kicked around a brief "so what" or two.
- I assigned a passage for you to look up on biblegateway.com. Find the King James Version of Matthew 23: 27-32.
- New hand-out: Questions over Heart of Darkness.

Re-read Part I, answering questions as you go. Focus your energy on the ones that begin in the middle of the page (the 1-18 set). Realistically, we will probably get only to about 12 or so, but things could pile up quickly if you get too far behind.
Expectation: note-taking style WITH relevant page numbers. Not to be stamped or collected, but definitely intended to enhance the quality and precision of the discussion.
