TODAY IN CLASS
Heart of Darkness:  The initial "sketch" activity was an intended as an exercise in close reading, not so much as a geography test or a contest of "who's got the best footnotes."  However, now that we've done that, you might want to google Gravesend as both regular map and satellite image categories.  Gradually move out so that you see all the way to London as well as where the estuary opens up into the actual sea.

Second and third periods need to record evidence for two things:  1) the tone/mood of the opening three paragraphs (some will see this as a single mood; many will see complementary tones here).  2) consider light/dark/color. . . .how does this play out?  Is it part of the tone set-up?  Does it do something else/something additional?

Tomorrow we will continue with a close reading of the opening few pages.  You can certainly feel free to go beyond our slow start, though, given the deadline described next.

H of D  Reading Expectation:  You will read this novella twice:  once through by Monday (yes, start now), and then more slowly from the 9th to Monday the 16th.  It is dense, difficult in many ways, but extremely rewarding.

FOR TOMORROW
So do the quick textual notation (just on your notes, nothing "official") and perhaps get going on the reading.  A few people did not have your book in class today. DON'T BE WITHOUT IT TOMORROW.  There will be no additional print-outs beyond the single page I had in class today.
