OK, so I apologize for the schedule change. No in-class writing today (if were gone and that's what you thought you missed). We talked quite a bit about the female savage style analysis, and compared/contrasted the context and portrayal of "My Intended" at the end of the text. I leave you largely to see how both women contribute to Marlow's view of/expectations about woment in general.
There WILL be a test over the whole book tomorrow, Tuesday, as previously scheduled. (Scantron--have a pencil)
The in-class timed write will be on Wednesday. Yes, no time to spare, but we will make it work.
In preparation for tomorrow's test, review names/descriptions/terms for people and places. There will be matching ID's, multiple choice, and a series of plot quotes in which you need to identify a variety of elements as requested. Fun stuff. Some of you will ace it.
In terms of Part III, be sure to know what happens in a series of key exchanges: the Manager with Kurtz, the Manager with Marlow about Kurtz (and his methods), Marlow's conversations with Kurtz and his experience of following Kurtz (why??), and the three or so versions/references to Kurtz's death and his final words even before the lie Marlow tells the lie to the Intended. Really think about why Marlow continues to be fascinated and protective of Kurtz even after he is well aware of the truth about the man. What kind of devil is he? On what grounds? Do you take Marlow's explanation for his lie at face value? Why or why not? And consider the closing sentences of the story, as the scene returns to the deck of the Nellie. How has Marlow's story been received? What's the point? Go back to the original narrator's assessment of how Marlow's stories were different from typical sailors' yarns.
I really can't get at all of this on a Scantron test, of course, but paying close attention to these Part III issues will still be pretty useful, I think. And you will have one final opportunity to address some of the essential ideas.
See you tomorrow.
