Friday Post--OK, It's Sunday, but this is for Friday . . .

IN CLASS
Well, things varied enough I will just say that by now everyone has discussed "The Emperor of Ice Cream," "One Art," "A Valediction Forbidding Mourning," and "The Flea."  And everyone has written a potential thesis for the "One Art" question and learned how/why so many efforts fell short.  AP =Answer the Prompt.

FOR MONDAY
Primary Responsibility:  Tess. You should be finished with Phase the Fifth by Monday.

So that leaves little time for most of you for anything else.  However, there are three poems in your book that I wish you to read/think through (using whichever means of exploring an unfamiliar poem you think best).
1) Dylan Thomas, "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night"--and read what the book says about the villanelle as a fixed form.
2) Read "To the Virgins to Make Much of Time" by Robert Herrick, and Andrew Marvell's "To His Coy Mistress."  Though students sometimes say they like Herrick's poem better, literary critics virtually all agree that Marvell's is the richer, "better" poem.  What do you you think accounts for the differing views?

PLAN TO BRING BOTH BOOKS EVERY DAY THIS WEEK.  I KNOW--A ROYAL PAIN.

Schedule Reminders This Week--
Crime and Punishment timed write make-up:  Monday or Tuesday (40 minutes flat)
MC Practice Test--Tuesday and Thursday, 2:30-3:30 (everyone start/stop together)
Part II Practice (3 consecutive essays):  Wednesday morning 7:30-9:30 a.m.
