TODAY IN CLASS
If you were absent today for testing or other reasons, it is your responsibility to show me the quality of your annotating for Chapter 1, esp. to the break on p. 15, on your first day back.
We added a few more items to the list of things to keep track of; absolutely essential categories are music and flight/flying, but people also wisely suggested water, women, texture, historical allusions vs. the religious ones we've already seen as part of "names," and perhaps others. We talked about the watermark on the table as a specific symbol. As just a mere example of the scope of color imagery, we connected YELLOW beyond its obvious use as a color for many different items to its use in such terms as a "sunshine cake", "lemony skin"(or "buttery skin"--smooth texture was probably the intended rererent, but there's color, too, and I think it was contrasted with "ashy" skin), or even references to eggs, especially the yolks of eggs. (And yes, eggscould probably become a category of their own.)
We didn't try to do much with thematic ideas, although identity (the blackest child in the family becomes known as Milkman, though for altogether different reasons).
I asked people . . . OK , I've got to run, and I hope to finish the thought later, but for now:
ASSIGNMENT FOR TUESDAY-
Read Chapter 2 (24 pages in most editions). No required annotation, but read with your mind fully engaged, and some people can do that best with a pencil in hand.
