Continued discusson of Steinbeck's "The Chrysanthemums." Again, there was some discrepancy among the periods. First period turned in the first installment of the RRJ, which included yesterday's question about Elisa's character. Other classes got theirs back, and they added a short discussion of Steinbeck's characterization of Elisa--not merely what learn about her, but how the author establishes character (what methods he uses) in the three paragraphs that focus on her.
FOR TOMORROW:
1) Be prepared for Part I of the Atonement assessment
2) Remember your signed slips if you want 5 bonus points
Looking ahead to next week--
- Monday: Timed Essay (closed-book) on Atonement
- for Tuesday: Finish reading "The Chrysanthemums," and respond to the following discussion questions with a significant paragraph or so of writing for each one
1) Discuss Elisa’s parting “message” to the chrysanthemum shoots: why? what does she mean?
what do the chrysanthemums seem to symbolize to her?
2) Discuss the significance of the “bath scene,”
paying particular attention of how it relates to the meaning of the work as a whole.
3) Explain the story’s ending—Elisa’s portion of the closing conversation and the final simile.
